Troop Movements 1 year 9 months ago #206

Hi,

Often the census shows us that a families children were born in a very wide variety of places. These can often be families of canal and railway workers or soldiers.

I've just learnt that apart from regimental records, giving locations, newspapers often reported the comings and goings of soldiers from the local barracks. My experience was around the 1820's and 1830's.

That is interesting about the newspapers reporting on movements of soldiers from the local barracks.

There is a lot of information in Shipping News in 19th Century newspapers (that can usually be searched through your County Library)about the various ships and regiments arriving or departing from ports. I found these whilst searching for information on the Napoleonic Wars. There is sometimes a list of wounded officers or those who have died in battle.

Morning,

The London Gazette, www.london-gazette.co.uk/ is the official government newspaper. Officer promotions and awards of service and honour are frequently to be found there. Remember it may take some time for the process to take place, so be quite generous with your time frames in searches.
